NHK WORLDTokyo-Aomori bullet train line opens
A bullet train line connecting Tokyo with Aomori City in the northernmost prefecture of Japan's Honshu main island has fully opened.
The Tohoku Shinkansen Line has been extended by about 82 kilometers from Hachinohe in Aomori Prefecture to Shin-Aomori.
The extension allows people to travel about 714 kilometers between Tokyo and Shin-Aomori in 3 hours 20 minutes, about 40 minutes less than before the extension.
On Saturday, the first train bound for Shin-Aomori left Tokyo Station at 6:28 AM.
At a ceremony marking the departure, East Japan Railway Company Chairman Mutsutake Otsuka said he wants many people to learn the appeal of Aomori, which is rich in tourism resources and hospitality.
JR East plans to introduce the new Shinkansen model, named Hayabusa, or falcon, on the line next March. This will reduce the travel time even further to about 3 hours 5 minutes.
